Augmented and Virtual Reality for Preprocedural Planning in Hepatic Transarterial Interventional Oncology
Dr. Gordon will present applications of spatial computing in interventional radiology, focusing on patient-specific 3D visualization for hepatic arterial anatomy and Y-90/TARE (transarterial radioembolization) vascular navigation and treatment planning. He'll show how conventional cross-sectional and angiographic imaging can be converted into interactive 3D representations of tumor and vascular anatomy — viewed on Apple Vision Pro — to support catheter selection and procedural planning. The talk will be grounded in results from a recent 50-case pilot of AR/VR-based planning in complex interventional oncology procedures: planning took a median of 5 minutes and was judged to have changed the procedural approach in 46% of cases, largely by improving identification of tumor-feeding arteries and complex hepatic arterial anatomy. Finally, transitioning to intra-procedural guidance, use cases, and emerging directions —multimodal integration, co-registered overlays, multidisciplinary collaboration, and integration with Y-90 dosimetry — will be shared.

VA Immersive - A New Reality in Health Care at the Veterans Health Administration
Dr. Bailey will present her work at VA Immersive, explaining building the immersive community within the largest integrated -healthcare systems in the world. VA Immersive is an initiative led by the Veterans Health Administration's Digital Health Office that deploys immersive technologies — including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and spatial computing — as supplemental tools to improve Veteran health outcomes across more than 40 clinical indications nationwide, including mental health (PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance use disorder), pain management (acute, chronic, and phantom limb pain), and physical rehabilitation (physical, occupational, and recreational therapy). Developed and scaled by the Strategic Initiatives Lab (Strat Lab), Supported by a growing XR Network of over 3,400 members, communities of practice, and on-demand continuing education, VA Immersive positions immersive technology not as a replacement for clinical care, but as an accessible, scalable supplement — offering Veterans controlled, evidence-based virtual experiences that improve access, engagement, and well-being.
Where Clinical Excellence Meets Innovation
The MedVR and MGB collaboration naturally emerged from a common interest to support the increasing use of extended reality in healthcare in the greater Boston medical cluster, and to support a self-sustaining ecosystem of clinicians, extended reality professionals, and entrepreneurs that continually innovate.
Program Goals
- Provide continuing education for healthcare professionals
- Accelerate adoption of XR in medical education, diagnostics, therapy, and surgery
- Precipitate collaboration between hospitals, universities, and MedTech innovators
- Convene clinicians, and technical professionals, and students to bridge the gap between clinical practice and emerging XR technology
- Disseminate evidence-based research on immersive outcomes
